S. João da Foz (Forte), Porto This fortress, also known as Foz Castle (Castelo da Foz), located in Oporto, was built in the 16th century and enlarged in the 17th century to protect Douro port. The mouth of the river has deeply changed throughout the centuries, along with the construction of embankments, so that this former maritime fortress was kept aside from the river, with traffic around it. A beautiful example of military architecture, this fortress contains the ruins of 15th century church São João da Foz, a Benedict abbey and D. Miguel da Silva Palace. Downstream we find the elegant cosmopolitan Foz quarter, while upstream begins Passeio Alegre, a Romantic garden. |
