Paredes de Vitória is located at the mouth of the Paredes river valley (geographical coordinates), parish of Pataias, municipality of Alcobaça. The short distances to the main towns in the region (Pataias 7km, Nazaré 13km, Marinha Grande 16km, Alcobaça 24km, Batalha 24km, Leiria 25km, Porto de Mós 25km) make this beach one of the main summer destinations. The predominant climate results from Mediterranean and Atlantic influences. The Mediterranean influence is felt predominantly in the summer, being associated with high temperatures and sunshine and an almost total absence of precipitation. Paredes beach, generally oriented North-South and Northeast-Southeast, is approximately 2500 meters long, with its width varying greatly with the tides and also throughout the year. Its white sand originates from wind deposition and large movements of the sea, which leads to constant silting between the months of May to September and intense erosion processes of wear, in the months of November to April. It is crossed by the Paredes river, which throughout the year meanders along the beach, pushed by the wind, but always finding its way to the sea. During the summer, the open sea is rough when the north is felt. The parallelism of the waves to the coastline and the characteristics of the seabed provide surfers and bodyboarders with excellent spots. It is also in the valley and in the surrounding pine forest that some fauna that was previously very typical of this region remains. Traces of an old beach located 60 m above current sea level were detected on the cliffs. |
