The hills of the “Serra da Boa Viagem” stretching towards the sea, retain significant place names (Good Voyage), and were most probably a sacred place, as can seen by a number of megaliths in the area. Along with Buarcos, it makes up a symbolic system that is related to the interior, due to the extensive navigability of the River Mondego and to the historic relevance of the settlements it served inland, particularly Montemor-o-Velho, with its monumental heritage and strange legends as to its foundation.
