Thalli with uniaxial cladomian structure, consisting of a cylindrical portion erect, branched and cortical cross bands. The ramifications may be alternate, predominantly unilateral or irregular, often dichotomous. Apex of forked branches, curved. Axial filament composed of large cells surrounded by a band of transverse cortical cells forming a pleuridian cortex, sometimes thorny, which may be continuous or discontinuous. Prominent cystocarps in the cortex, usually surrounded by small bowed cladom. Sessil tetrasporangia presenting tetrahedrally divided tetraspores. |
