Porphyra umbilicalis is an edible reddish brown algae (green when young) which has a circular frond and an overlapping base which umbilicates. Its texture is smooth and forms sheetlike thalli, often attached to rocks; can also be found clinging to other seaweeds. This algae belongs to the Phylum Rhodophyta, Class Bangiophyceae, Order Bangiales, Family Bangiaceae. Each individual is up to 10 centimeters tall, 20 centimeters across. P. umbilicalis is known as as zicai in China, nori in Japan, and gim in Korea. Has a short lifespan, but reproduces very quickly. |
