Description: Gracilaria gracilis  is a red alga (phylum Rodophyta) of  the class Florideophyceae and the family Gracilariaceae.Thallus is cylindrical and cartilaginous and fronds are purple rising from a small discoid holdfast terete to 60 cms long. Brancheds are very irregular, sparse or profuse. Cystocarps are large, produding as nodules.

Internal tissue of large thin-walled more or less colourless cells with narrow outer cortical zone of small coloured cells.

Habitat is common, on rocks and stones. It is widely distributed around the world and can easily be found along portuguese coast.
