Description: |
Ulva lactuca is an seaweed. Its colour can range from light yellowish green to darker green with translucent sheets. In the water the alga looks very much like young lettuce leaves but out of water it looks like a rather slimy lime-green mass. The frond is connected to rocks with a small, almost invisible discoid holdfast, and does not have a stipe. The soft frond grows as a single, irregular, round shaped blade with slightly ruffled edges which are often torn. There can be numerous small holes or perforations scattered throughout Ulva lactuca can be found in an array of habitats, but is seen more abundantly in sheltered bays. |
