Identif Year:  2014
Colecting Site(s):
Cala Vadella Beach (Ibiza Is, Spain)
Notes: Gui Rosa e Ricardo Oliveira Collecting site: Cala Vedella, Ibiza, Spain Collecting site description: Located on the western shore of the Mediterranean Spanish island of Ibiza, Cala Vadella is a small cove and beach resort. The cove is surrounded by rocky cliffs covered with pine trees and possesses a wide, fine white sand beach, located at the eastern end, which slopes gently into the shallow, crystal clear waters of the bay, making it an ideal swimming and snorkeling location. Other small, satellite, beaches exist to the north on a small headland that itself has a small inlet. The small resort is located behind the main beach and caters primarily to families and couples.
Description:

A slow-growing algae that presents a globulous shape when young that morphs into a more flattened, concave centered  form when adult. As it grows it fills with water as the internal structure loses density and the hairy, velvety thallus grows larger and thicker (50-400mm in diameter), effectively becoming spongiform. It's surface is indented and varies in coloration along various dark hues of green, reaching almost blackish tones in some areas. Felted filaments latch it to the substratum.
