Identif Year:  2014
Colecting Site(s):
Cabo do Mundo (Beach), Portugal
Notes: Filipe Vieira e Miguel Lopes Aguda, Portugal - The picture of this algae was taken on the 28th of August of 2014 at Aguda Beach, in Portugal. Aguda is one of the small villages located in the parish of Arcozelo (municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia), at about 13 Km south of the city of Porto. In spite of being an area primarily devoted to artisanal fishing activities, Aguda is known by its wide sandy beach, with beautiful dunes and natural vegetation landscape. It is an inviting place for long walks by the sea or a pleasant swim in the ocean, with the water at 16o C in the summer, for practicing sports, such as surf and many other activities provided by the good beach facilities. There is also a lighthouse signaling the rocky seabed inhabited by a reach marine life.
Description: Bifurcaria bifurcata has a cylindrical shape and dichotomous branching with an olive-yellow colour, but it gets much darker when dried. Reproductive structures are usually present at the end of the branches, during spring. It can reach up to 30 cm long.
