Notes: Renan Mantovani Rabelo-Palma Nova Bay, Mallorca, Spain-The Bay of Palma Nova, located on the southwest coast, is one the many balneary centers of the island of Mallorca. The latter is located in the Mediterranean Sea, just 2000 kilometers from the Spanish mainland. It is the largest island of the Balearics. Majorca is known for its pleasant temperature in both summer and winter. The average winter lies around 15°C, while in summer reaches 29°C. Palma Nova is one of the first purpose-built tourist destination in Mallorca and is a good destination for a family holiday. Palma Nova has three beaches. The main beach Playa de Son Maties has a length of 1200 metres, Cala Blanca 1000 metres and Es Carregador 600 metres. All three beaches have fine white sand and clear blue water. Facilities are excellent at all of the beaches, with sunloungers and parasols for rent, showers and toilets, good disable access and a high level of lifeguarding services. All three beaches are child friendly. Gentle slope and fairly shallow water. The bay is popular with boats, with both private yachts visiting for the day and commercial boat trips where you can sail around Mallorca’s coastline. There are many standard restaurants and bars located on the promenade behind the beach. A host of shops selling lilos, novelty inflatables and buckets e spades can be found all along the promenade. Free car parking is available and access is also possible by public bus. The beaches in Palma Nova offers yet a wide range of water sports. The best selection is found on Cala Clanca.
Description: The frond is thin and leafy, flattish and entire when young, but often concave, or almost funnel shaped in mature specimens, with a lactiniate or irregularly lobed margin. Each blade is calcified, more heavily above and lightly below, and curls inward near the edges. The inner (or upper) surface is covered in a thin coating of slime, and the outer (or lower) surface is banded with zones of light brown, dark brown and olive green. Small, fine hairs form concentric lines, 3-5 mm apart, from the outer margin continuing down the outer (coloured) surface of the fronds. The blades attach to the substratum via a holdfast, which is often matted.
