Description:

Chordaria flagelliformis (O.F.Müller) C.Agardh 1817 is a slippery, solid algae with a string-like thallus and divaricated branches, which emerge alternatly from all sides of this organism. These branches, which have blunt tips, are most often cylindrical in shape, with diameters of 3 mm or smaller, tapering towards the base of the algae. In the inner portion of this organism, there are filamentous structures running longitudinally. These structures are composed of cylindrical cells (50-600 µm) that become gradually smaller towards the outter layer of the algae. Starting from the outter cells, unbranched 4-9 cell row filaments arise, ending in oval one compartment (unilocular) sporangia. This seaweed is dark-brown to black in colour, standing 10 to 30 cm tall.
