Notes: Hugo Guímaro, Ivo Santos Porto Covo, Sines, Portugal. On this beach is common to find shells and whelks. This beach is located on the southside of the urban area of Porto Covo and is small and cupped. It is almost all submerged in high tide. On the cliff top there is a viewpoint and the access to the beach is made by a staircase on the west side. This place it´s a pacific and beautiful rocky beach where people can walk by the sea and enjoy the view.
Description:

Fucus spiralis is a common and familiar seaweed. It can be found on the high shore and is a brown seaweed. It grows up to 40 cm long and lives for up to 4 years.

The species can tolerate a high level of desiccation and it has a characteristic ridge along the edge of the receptacles.

Adult plants are easily recognizable by the flattened, twisted, lacking bladders, and the large, oval receptacles at the frond tips. Each receptacle is surrounded by a narrow rim of vegetative frond.
