Identif Year:  2015
Colecting Site(s):
Porto Côvo (Buizinhos Beach), Sines, Portugal
Notes: Ana Granja Santos e Tiago Lopes. Porto Covo, Sines, Portugal Buizinhos’ Beach got its name thanks to its sands full of small shells. The beach is located on the Southern tip of the urban sea front of Porto Covo and it is set in a bay facing south. This beach got small dimensions and the form of a shell and it is almost all submerged at the flood tide. On the cliff top there is a viewpoint. The access is easy because it’s made by a little staircase.
Description: Ulva intestinalis was formerly known as Enteromorpha intestinalis but a recent study placed this seaweed in the genus Ulva. It’s a bright green seaweed with thin and tubular filaments that can grow more than 50 centimeters. It’s also an ephemeral macroalga recognized by its bright and almost neon-green colour. Ulva intestinalis is a summer annual that decays and forms masses of bleached white fronds approaching the end of the season. Curiously, it’s a seaweed that can break from its hold fast and rise to the surface where it can continue to grow, due to its capacity to float up because of its internal gases.
