Notes: Rina François, Irene Martin Eskifjördur, Iceland The photo was taken in Eskifjördur, a small fishing industry town in the eastern Iceland. The seaweed was found in the mid-littoral zone of a rocky shore. This village is surrounded by glaciers. The temperature of the water of the sea is so cold that it is cover by floating icebergs.
Description: This seaweed is Fucus spiralis Linnaeus. It belongs to the Class Phaeophyceae or brown algae. A characteristic of this seaweed is that it can remain long periods of time out of the water. We can found this specie in the atlantic coast of Europe and north America. Fucus spiralis can support low temperatures. Its structure is featured by a stem fixed to the ground and on the top part is devided dichotomically in robust fronds. This seaweed can hibridate itself with other species of the genius Fucus (Fucus vesiculosus). It can reach the 30 cm of lenth.
