Description: |
Porto Covo, Sines, Portugal Fucus spiralis is a seaweed usually olive brown with smooth border. It has a consistent tissue without air bladders and a central proeminent nervure. The branches of this plant are twisted and flattened, however, during the summer, it can be round at the edge where we can see the reproductive organs. Usually, this seaweed habitat are rocky and high seashores with little exposition to ocean waters. Fucus spiralis spends up to ninety percent of the time out of water, being able to tolerate a high level desiccation between tides. This seaweed can reach a length of 40 cm and live in average for 4 years (maturing at 2 years). Reproduction usually begins before or during the second year of growth, from the end of winter through spring and summer. |
