The species has highly differentiated basal and apical regions. Catenate pneumatocyts are also present. Older plants display an elongated main axis that, as time goes on, becomes proportionally elongated. Lower parts are flattened into 'foliar expansions' or basal leaves. Fertile regions which bear conceptacles are known as receptacles, which are normally found at the tips of the branches. Aerocyst keep the organism erect when faced against strong currents. This species is perenial so it can be used as a means of evaluating the quality of aquatic ecosystems.
