Local where this seaweed was photographed: Eskifjordur, Iceland Description of location: Eskifjordur is a seaside village located in East Iceland in the middle of the eastern Fjords. The culture and the industry have been shaped by the sea for a long time, highlighting the existing harbor there. What makes your economy is the main industry of fishing. This site offers all basic services for travelers, guesthouses, a camping ground, coffeehouses, health services, pharmacies, among others. The prevailing climate in this area is a tundra climate, meaning that, even in the warmest months the temperatures are very low. Being the month of July the warmest of the year with and average temperature 8.4 degrees Celsius and January the coldest with the lowest average temperature of the year -1.0 degrees Celsius. Regarding will precipitation, the driest month is June, with 78 mm of rainfall. Most of the precipitation falls in October with an average of 159 mm. The average annual temperature in Eskifjordur is 3.1 degrees Celsius and the average rainfull is 1317 mm.
Description: Is a large yellowish-brown kelp, which has a long undivided frond with wrinkled surface and wavy margins, rising from a smooth flexible stipe and without midrib. It has blades, stipes and small branching holdfast which attach to substrates. The stipe of Saccharina latissima can grown 50 cm long. Saccharina latissima, marine species, is usually found from the sublittoral fringe down to a depth of 30 m and it rarely occurs in rock polls. The species usually occurs in sheltered conditions and may attach to uns. It lives for 2 to 4 years and grows quickly from winter to April. Carbohydrates stored as mannitol and laminarin are used to support the growth of new tissues. Saccharina latissima contains various pigments including chlorophylls a and c (c1, c2, c3), beta carotene, fucoxanthin, and neofucoxanthin, as well as other cartenoids.
