Porto Covo, Sines, Portugal:
Located in the council of Sines, is a small town in the southwestern coast of Portugal. It is named after the term covo which refers to a fishing net, used for capturing lobsters and crabs and is situated in Alentejo s Southwestern Natural Park and Vicentine Coast, that goes from the city of Sines to St. Vincent s Cape.
This coast is known for having protected landscapes, high cliffs and scarps, beaches with warm crystal waters and habitats for migratory and endemic species.
This small town became a civil parish on 31 December 1984 and covers an area of 48.73 km2 of land. |
Description: |
Asparagopsis armata is a red algae (Phylum Rhodophyta, Order Bonnemaisoniales) with two distinct morphologies during its life cycle, the asexual tetrasporophyte and the sexual gametophyte. Both phases are often found growing on other algae, especially in association with Ulva species. It is known for having branches modified in thorns and can be found on shallow subtidal areas and, occasionally, in deeper waters, for instance, Europe, Atlantic Islands and Australia. |
