Description: Laminaria hyperborea is a species of brown alga, part of the family Laminariaceae, with golden brown to dark brown coloration. This species is usually about 2 m long but can grow up to 3.5 m in ideal conditions, its stipe is circular in cross section, stiff, rough textured, thick at the base tapering upwards. The blade is large, growing up 1.5 m long, broad, tough, flat and glossy and is divided into 5 to 20 straps or digitate segments. The algae’s holdfast has a “claw-like” conical shape with branched rhizoids. The blade and stipe appearance vary with its location, exposure and current. In sheltered conditions the blade has few to no digits and the stipe becomes thin but in exposed conditions the blade is deeply
