Cala Domingos, Cales de Mallorca, Mallorca, Spain -
Cala Domingos is the biggest of the three small sandy coves of Calas de Mallorca in Spain. This particularly beach is located in the east side of the Mallorca island and it has been distinguished with the blue flag for cleanliness and it has fine grains of sand with no rocks (so it’s very easy to get in and out of water) and amazing light blue water, although it has strong undercurrents and waves, so It´s not the best beach for weak swimmers. Also it is very easy to access to it from town. |
Description: |
Green algae typically found in subtropical waters. It is unicellular but with a giant in size (it can grow up to 10 cm tall) and complex form. It is divided in three regions: bottom rhizoid with short roots, a long stalk in the middle and an umbrella shaped cap in the top. This algae is an amazing model for tests in cell biology and his nucleus is located in the rhizoid so an interesting feature is the ability to regenerate completely even if the cap is removed and it can also produce the reproductive cap without the nucleus. |
