Description: Mastocarpus stellatus is a species of red algae (Rhodophyta) also called false Irish moss because it is quite easy to confuse with Irish moss (Chondrus crispus). The main characteristics that separate these species are the channeled foliage and the appearance of reproductive bodies on mature plants. This alga is found in rocky areas and cold waters (Figueira da Foz; Coast of Ireland and Great Britain).
