Description: |
Soft, cylindrical, crimson to brownish red fronds, to 200 mm (usually much shorter). Much branched, axes constricted into bead-like portions, ramuli at nodes, often whorled. Base of creeping rhizoidal filaments. Original publication: Lyngbye, H.C. (1819). Tentamen hydrophytologiae danicae continens omnia hydrophyta cryptogama Daniae, Holsatiae, Faeroae, Islandiae, Groenlandiae hucusque cognita, systematice disposita, descripta et iconibus illustrata, adjectis simul speciebus norvegicis. pp. [i]-xxxii, [1]-248, 70 pls. Hafniae [Copenhagen]: typis Schultzianis, in commissis Librariae Gyldendaliae.
Download PDF from Algaebase A small (up to 20 cm tall, but usually much shorter) dark brown to red alga. The thallus is conspicuously constricted giving a segmented appearance. Starting almost at the base, many branches grow out of each constriction, the bead-like segments becoming gradually smaller towards the tip of the branch. The plant is very shiny and the tips of branches may be bleached pink or orange (Pereira 2010). |
