Description:

Thallus heavily calcified, forming clumps, ivory to pale pink or purple (Image 1). Branches cylindrical, 1-2 mm wide. Branching dichotomous. Joints (genicula) not swollen and rarely found at branching dichotomies.

Name History Adjective (Latin), rigid (Stearn 1973).
Biogeography Cosmopolitan species, present in warmer and tropical seas.
Life Cycle Tetra/bisporangial conceptacles: uniporate, lateral, hemispheric, slightly raised; periphery not well defined but evident; 300-400 (500) mm diameter, 100-150 mm high; old conceptacles become buried in the thallus.
