Type information: |
Basionym Conferva corymbosa Smith Type information Type locality: Brighthelmston, Sussex, England (Silva, Basson & Moe 1996: 897). Lectotype: Borrer; July 1811; BM-K (Dixon & Price 1981: 137). Notes: Other type localities: Kingsbridge, coll. Gibbs; Bantry Bay, coll. Hutchins (Smith, 1911, pl.2352). Comments: Harris (1966) quoted the type locality as Kingsbridge and cited as holotype a specimen “in the British Museum of Natural History, no. 271". The original treatment is based on three collections, so that holotype status for any specimen is impossible. It would appear that this author was misled by the seven irrelevant specimens, in the type folder at BM, mounted on the same sheet as the Borrer specimen. The specimen cited by Harris is an example from “Algarum fasciculi" distributed by J. Cocks, and has no relevance whatsoever to the typification of Conferva corymbosa. |
