Thallus loosely intertwined, brown, regularly forking, fork-angles usually wide (>90º), width of thallus-sections varying. to 3 mm at the base, then abruptly narrowing to less than o.5 mm. Rhizoidal holdfast. Brown colour. Size: 3 to 7 cm long.

Type information:
Basionym: Dictyota bartayresiana var. divaricata J.Agardh
Type locality: Vera Cruz, Mexico (De Clerck 2003: 163). Lectotype: LD 49170 (De Clerck 2003: 163). Notes: The name appeared first as a nomen in Liebmann (1846: 75). A description was later provided by J. Agardh. Study of the type material showed that D. bartayresiana var. divaricata is synonymous with D. cervicornis. LD 49170 was chosen as lectotype from a number of syntypes.
