Description: |
Cryptopleura ramosa is a common brownish red algae with 120mm tall. It has several branches which are membranous and thin, becoming irregulars in the upper ends. The vast amount of branches gives it a bushy tangled appearance with the branches tapering to rounded tips. Its margins are mostly waved and sometimes have compressed hooks or root-shaped attachment processes. However, Cryptopleura ramosa can greatly vary its growth form. It can live in rocks or in the Laminaria hyperborea’s stipes, and it is frequently found in the south of England and Ireland. The male form is distinguished from the female form because the first one is a little smaller and has paler antheridial patches near the tips of its branches. |
