Notes: Ivo Machado; Luísa Abreu ----- Porto Judeu, Terceira, Azores, Portugal ------ Porto Judeu, “Jewish Port”, is a small village localized in Angra do Heroísmo. This village belongs to the island Terceira from Azores. Porto Judeu has a harbour and excellent bathing areas, like Baía do Refugo which was formed from the activity of a volcano. The activity of this volcano also led to the formation of natural caves and high cliffs. People can easily explore its natural area although it has a particular climate condition by being a very dry zone.
Description:

Osmundea pinnatifida, more commonly known by Pepper Dulse, is a red alga. It’s a cartilaginous species which has a length of usually about 2-8 cm. The main axis has alternating branches that become shorter towards the top and largely rounded. The fronds are flattened with their colour varying from blackish-purple to yellow. Its colour, size and form are quite variable due to their location, for example, algae more exposed to the sunlight are green-yellow while algae less exposed are reddish-brown. This alga is commonly found in rocks in Adriatic and Baltic Sea, Iberian Peninsula, Scotland and Ireland. In Scotland this seaweed is used as a spice due to its aromatic flavour.
