Description: |
Undaria pinnatifida, also known as wakame in its native regions like Japan, Korea, and China, belongs to the order Laminariales. This brown alga consists of three easily recognizable parts: the blade, which is usually broad and wavy; the stipe, cylindrical in shape; and the holdfast. It thrives in the upper part of the infralittoral zone, from 10 to 18 meters deep, and can quickly reach lengths of up to 3 meters. This rapid growth, along with its easy propagation through the adhesion of spores to ships, has made it an invasive species in New Zealand, Australia, and Europe, where it threatens native biodiversity. It has an annual digenetic life cycle with a dominant sporophyte phase. It is widely used in cosmetics due to its antioxidant properties. |
