Description:

Mastocarpus stellatus also known as False Irish Moss is a red macroalgae from the Rhodophyta Phylum, Florideophyceae Class and Gigartinales Order. It was first described in the year of 1797 by Stackhouse as Fucus stellatus and is usually found in very exposed Atlantic shores. The name False Irish Moss comes from the fact that this species can easily be confused with the species Chondrus crispus if it isn’t for some differences in the female reproductive bodies and the fronds. Mastocarpus stellatus can have up to 17 cm length, is very ramified and its color can vary from a dark red to a more brownish color. It is also edible. This model was found in Buarcos, Figueira da Foz in the 19th October 2024.
