Description: Gracilaria multipartita, also known as Cleaved Wart Weed, is a translucent, purple or reddish-brown alga that belongs to the most evolved class of red algae, Florideophyceae. Its name derived from the Latin name gracilis and was inspired by the algae's characteristics of delicacy and fineness, while the restrictive multipartita was given due to its segmented branches. However, we should not be deceived by its delicate appearance, as this species possesses a remarkable adaptability, tolerating a wide range of wave exposure and even sand cover, and can be found at considerable depths. This flexibility also enables it to survive in various environmental conditions, which explains its presence in Figueira-da-Foz, where the climate is considered Mediterranean, despite its preference for tropical regions.
