Description: |
Codium tomentosum is a small marine macroalga that belongs to the phylum Chlorophyta and the family Codiaceae and can grow up to 30 cm in length. This dark green alga has a highly branched, dichotomous thallus, with thin, cylindrical branches that can measure between 8 and 10 mm in diameter. Its fronds are solid yet spongy, with a felt-like texture due to the presence of colorless hairs covering the surface, which are especially noticeable when submerged. The alga attaches to the substrate via a disk-shaped holdfast that further ramifies into filaments. It is perennial with growth and reproduction peaks occurring between the end of summer and the beginning of autumn, due to the higher water temperatures. Codium tomentosum can be found in both sheltered and exposed areas, in the upper infralittoral zone, the lower midlittoral zone and in tide pools. Native to the northeastern Atlantic, it's range goes from the British Isles in the north to the Azorean and Cape Verdean archipelagos in the south. |
