Description:

 

Codium tomentosum, popularly called Sponge weed or Velvethorn, is a spongy green macroalgae. This algae is fixed by a spongy disc and its body is a dark green spongy stalk that branches out in bifurcations, which makes this algae easily recognizable among the other green macroalgae. It is common in coastal regions of the Mediterranean and North Atlantic, its habitat is in the rocky substrate in tidal pools and in the lower-intertidal and subtidal. This native species has varied uses from human food to agriculture, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.
