In taxonomic terms, Codium tomentosum belongs to the Kingdom Plantae, Phylum Chlorophyta, Order Bryopsidaes, Family Codiaceae, Genus Codium and Species C. tomentosum. This algae is characteristic of coastal areas of the North Atlantic, inhabiting, preferably, rocky areas of cold or temperate waters. It has a green color, usually a darker green, and a spongy texture. Its stalk (erect part) is quite branched, with relatively thin branches of different sizes. It is covered by several colorless hairs and can grow to about 30cm. It can establish symbiotic relationships with other organisms (e.g., the algae Elysia viridis). It is currently studied for potential pharmaceutical use due to its anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties.In addition, it is used in human food and cosmetics, since it is a very enriched algae in terms of nutrients, vitamins and moisturizing properties. |
