Undaria pinnafitida is a large brown kelp that can reach up to 3 meters in lenght. Undaria belongs to the Laminariales order and is structurally divided into a leaf, central vein, sporophyll and roots. The main photosynthetic pigment is carotenoids, particularly fucoxanthin. Commonly known as wakame it is used as a food source in Japan, Korea and China. It has a large temperature tolerance, growing well in cold-temperate to subtropical waters and is found on a range of substrates, including rocky seabed.
