Description: Undaria pinnatifida is the scientific name for a macroalgae that is better known as wakame. It is native to cold temperate areas and has been named one of the hundred worst invasive species in the world. This algae has the colour brown because of a pigment called fucoxanthin. It has wide, wavy leaves, has a soft texture and can reach up to 3 meters in lenght. Wakame is rich in nutrients such as calcium and iron, is a source of iodine and is low in caloires. It is mainly used in soups and sushi in asian cuisine.
