Codium tomentosum is a small green marine macroalgae. Belongs to the Chlorophyta phylum and the Codiaceae family, and can grow up to 30 cm in length. It is a dark green alga, whose stalk or frond (erect part of a macroalgae) has a dichotomous, very branched structure, whose branches are thin and cylindrical, measuring 8 to 10 millimeters in diameter, and is therefore known as “dead man's fingers”. (SIA, 2013). In Portugal it is also commonly known as Chorão, Chorão do mar and Pingarelhos (Guiry & Guiry, 2013). |
