| Description: |
Bifurcaria bifurcata is a brown macroalgae with a cylindrical thallus, subdichotomously branched, with zigzag-patterned branches of a brownish-yellow colour, which tends to darken when dried. This specimen measures around 7 cm in length, although the species can reach up to 30 cm. The branches combine flexibility and rigidity: they are pliable to the touch but retain a firm consistency, similar to leather. Attachment to the substrate is normally ensured by several holdfast discs; however, in the specimen observed there is only one holdfast disc. |
